Northwestern Connecticut Youth Hockey
Tournament Rules

The following guidelines will be used for all NWCYH Tournaments

1.   Teams at all levels will play at least three (3) games in a preliminary round. The teams accumulating the best record (most points) using the following point system will advance to the final round:
a.       A win counts as two (2) points
b.       A tie counts as one (1) point
In the event 2 teams are tied, the tie-breaking will be determined by the head to head results for those 2 teams.
If the head to head results of a two team tie are a tie or if more than two teams are tied the following tie-breaking formula will be applied:
  • Lowest Goals Against - the team with the least amount of goals   scored against them (all 3 games) will advance
If a tie still exists:
  • Goal Differential - add total goals scored (all 3 games) and subtract total goals against (all 3 games) to determine each teams goal differential. Team(s) with highest goal differential will advance
If a tie still exists:
  • Penalty Minutes - the team with the least amount of penalty minutes (not # of penalties) will advance
If a tie still exists:
  • Coin Toss - a coin toss will determine which teams will advance

2.  USA Hockey Rules will be used and followed for all tournament games. Fighting will not be tolerated. Any players/coaches ejected for fighting will be ejected from the remainder of the tournament.
3.   All games will consist of three 12 or 15 minute stop periods. No time-outs will be allowed during the tournament.
4.   Due to tight schedules, teams must be ready to be on the ice ten minutes prior to the scheduled start time.
5.   NWCYH adheres to USA Hockey's Zero Tolerance Policy. Any player, coach, fan, etc., will be ejected from the arena for abusive language and/or inappropriate behavior. Any such player, coach, fan, etc., who is ejected will be banned from the premises for the remainder of the tournament. It is the responsibility of each team to maintain the highest degree of behavior on or off the ice.
6.   A member of the NWCYH Hockey Board of Directors will be present at each of the tournament games. The decision of the board member on appropriate matters will be final.

Championship Game Ending in a Tie or In a 3 team competition when 2 vs. 3 are tied
Goalies will defend the same goal as in the third period. Each team will put 6 players (5 skaters + goalie) on the ice. Teams will then play for 3 minutes stop time. The first team to score wins (sudden death). If no team has scored after 3 minutes of play, play will stop and each team will put 5 players (4 skaters + goalie) on the ice for 3 minutes of stop time (sudden death). If there is still no score, play will stop and each team will put 4 players (3 skaters + goalie) on the ice for 3 minutes of stop time (sudden death).
Each sudden death period will start from the center ice face-off circle and will start ASAP, with no delays. There will be no time-outs, or breaks, during sudden death overtime.
If there is still no winner, there will be a five-man shoot out. Each team will select 5 different players for the shoot out. The visiting team will shoot first against the home goaltender. Teams will rotate (visiting team goes first, followed by home team, and so on). The team with the most number of goals scored after all five shooters wins.
If, after 5 shooters, the score remains tied the teams will enter into a one player sudden death shoot out. Each team will select one new shooter (can not have previously shot). Each team gets one shooter. This process will continue until a winner is declared.
